    Microsoft's newest operating system, billed as the biggest software upgrade since Windows 95 and destined for release in 2005, is code-named Longhorn in honour of a wild and noisy saloon in Whistler, B.C.

    It's no coincidence. Canadians are a sizeable force at the company's collegial headquarters 20 minutes east of Seattle, a high-tech mecca where engineers and programmers, clad in jeans and T-shirts, create a dizzying array of binary products used in more than 90 per cent of computers worldwide.
